February 2015 Club Meeting - Spoonwood Brewing Company

Sunday, February 22nd, 2015 at 2pm - 5pm

Location: 5981 Baptist Rd. Pittsburgh, PA 15236

This event is in the past.

The club's February, 2015 meeting will be held at Pittsburgh's newest craft brewery - Spoonwood Brewing in Bethel Park on Sunday, February 22nd at 2:00 PM.

Please RSVP here if you plan to attend.

This brewery is so new, in fact, that they're not even open yet!  But they will be opening soon, and business will be in full swing come February.

Spoonwood will be a brewpub and restaurant centered around a 15BBL brewhouse run by Brew Master Steve Ilnicki, known to many of us for his work as a brewer at Rock Bottom in the Waterfront.

The folks at Spoonwood are excited to be hosting us, and we're excited to get to check the place out.  So come check out the new space, get a tour of the brewhouse from Steve, and come thirsty.  Come hungry as well, because Spoonwood is building their kitchen around a woodfired pizza oven.  There is no cover charge for this event, but please plan to buy some food and a pint or two to show our support and to thank them for hosting us.

As always, please bring homebrew to share with the rest of us - bottles, growlers, whatever.  You'll be among fellow brewers who can give you whatever level of feedback you're looking for, but mostly it's just great to share your creation with others who appreciate it.

Meeting Topic

In addition to the normal club business portion of the meeting and the brewery tour and the homebrew sharing (and buying Spoonwood beer & food), we'll have a techinical presentation/discussion.  Competition ringer Andy Weigel will be discussion how to brew beer for competitions.  This information is useful to anyone looking to figure out how to brew beer to style, how to put your best foot forward in competitions, or just where to begin if you've never competed before.  Not everyone cares about entering competitions or winning medals, but even those just looking to brew better beer for their own consumption will take away some useful pointers.

See you there!

Cheers!

We are shelving Andy's talk on how to brew for competition for a short while to make room for an exciting presentation from Sean Kinnas showcasing the results of an open fermentation experiment. Sean brewed a big batch of ESB and fermented half with an airlock and half in an open vessel. We'll be tasting them both to compare while Sean goes over the details of his experiment. This should be interesting!
